For years, scientists on both sides of the Atlantic have been trying to unravel the “French paradox” – the finding that despite a high-fat diet, the French appear to have a lower rate of heart attacks (as well as a lower rate of obesity) than other Western countries, particularly the United States. One major reason: nutrition researchers now feel that sugar, flour and oxidized vegetable oil (such as soybean oil used in processed foods and for deep-frying), and not natural saturated fats such as butter or lard, are the major drivers of obesity and heart disease in the U.S.

There may also be other reasons for this paradox. These eight tactics are the norm in the typical French diet – consider changing your approach toward eating by adopting these strategies and see if it makes a difference in your life:

In October 2018 we sailed the Mediterranean Sea on a lovely 14-day “Origins of Wellness Cruise” onboard the Seabourn Odyssey. We took in the sights, scenes and delicious local cuisines along the southern coast of Greece – including Mykonos, Crete, Naxos, and Rhodes, as well as Syracuse, Italy; and Valletta, Malta.

We ended the voyage with an exceptional visit to Asklepion, an archeological site on the island of Kos at the sanctuary of Asclepius, the god of medicine. The well-known Greek physician, Hippocrates (the father of medicine) founded the Kos School of Medicine at this site.

This area is very special to me as it is the region where integrative medicine is rooted. It is said that the treatments offered at this sanctuary, or early version of a hospital were based on a healthy lifestyle; including water therapies like swimming, physical activity, a healthy diet, relaxation therapies, nature therapy, and a focus on recreation. Practitioners here are said to have used natural, herbal medicine and simple interventions – both are part of today’s principles of integrative medicine. This wellness cruise was an exciting adventure!

The wellness cruise program included many events, workshops and casual discussions with me and other top experts all trained in the field of integrative medicine:

Victoria Maizes, M.D., is executive director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and a professor of medicine, family medicine and public health at the University of Arizona. She is a graduate of Barnard College, and received her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, completed her residency in family medicine at the University of Missouri, Columbia, and her fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.

Ann Marie Chiasson, M.D., MPH, is the co-director of the fellowship in integrative medicine at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine in Tucson, Arizona. She is board-certified in family medicine and integrative medicine and completed a master’s degree in public health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Vivian A. Kominos, M.D., FACC received her medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. She is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology and integrative medicine.

Gulshan K. Sethi, M.D., graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India in 1963. He did an internship at the Norwalk Hospital (Yale affiliate), residency in general surgery at the Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago and University of Kansas. He completed his cardiothoracic and vascular surgery fellowship in 1972 from the University of Utah.

William Haas, M.D., earned both his medical and business degrees from East Carolina University, one of the nation’s top primary-care training programs. He is board-certified in family medicine and attended the University of Arizona for his integrative medicine fellowship, where he later served on faculty. In addition to his integrative medicine training, Dr. Haas is a candidate for certification with the Institute for Functional Medicine.

It’s delightful to grill outdoors when the weather is warm. Unfortunately, grilling meats can lead to the production of carcinogenic (potentially cancer-causing) chemicals called heterocyclic amines (HAs) as well as unhealthy PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). The good news is it simple to reduce HAs, making your BBQ healthier yet still as tasty for you, your family and your guests.

In May of 2018, I was fortunate enough to experience a fabulous wellness journey aboard the Seabourn Ovation. I traveled with several of my friends and colleagues from the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, where we hosted workshops, discussions and events that centered around physical, social, environmental and spiritual well-being.

We embarked on an 11-day inaugural voyage and traveled the Mediterranean Sea from Venice, Italy to Greece and on to Barcelona, Spain. With stops in many historic ports, we were able to see much of the area’s rich history and sample the cuisine that forms the basis of the very healthy Mediterranean Diet. Take a look at some of our travel photos.

All About Summer Berries https://www.drweil.com/videos-features/photo-galleries/all-about-summer-berries/ Mon, 16 Jul 2012 04:00:00 +0000 https://www.drweil.com/uncategorized/all-about-summer-berries/ In many parts of the country, summer berries are in their glory. Learn about which are best for health, and how to maximize their benefits.

Any way you buy them – fresh, frozen or dried – berries are a super food, and one of my favorites! Raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and blackberries are sweet, easy to pop into your mouth as a snack and a much healthier choice than a candy bar. All are anti-inflammatory, a good source of fiber, rich in flavonoids and carotenoids, and offer immune-boosting antioxidant activity. Because commercial strains of berries may be heavily sprayed with pesticides, I recommend buying only organic varieties of the berries listed here. And for an applicable use of berries, try our delicious Blueberry Pie recipe!

I recently spent several wonderful days along the coast of the Izu Peninsula, about 90 miles southwest of Tokyo. The highlight was the “Eye of Kannon,” one of the most extraordinary natural wonders I have ever seen. It is a near-perfect natural sphere, created over centuries by waves dashing it within a hollow in the tidal rocks.
