Two More Benefits Of Mushrooms?
From strengthened immunity to helping protect the nervous system, the humble mushroom seems to have no shortage of potential health benefits, and researchers are discovering even more reasons to value fungi. As we continue to celebrate mushrooms this week, we bring you two recent findings.
A dietary approach to depression
Last November, research from the Penn State College of Medicine identified a possible perk for people who eat plenty of mushrooms: a lower risk of developing depression. After analyzing data on diet and mental health from more than 24,000 U.S. adults between 2005 and 2016, they found that those who consumed mushrooms regularly had lower rates of depression than their peers.
A COVID-19 connection?
More recently, a report by South Korean researchers suggested that a type of cordyceps mushroom called Cordyceps militaris contains compounds that appear to act against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. Although more research is needed, this discovery might someday provide scientists with a new therapy for the disease.
